The original artwork of Susan Godwin

Painting is more than my occupation or career. It is a part of me that I cannot neglect for long. If I travel or for any reason stay away from my easel, I feel a sense of disconnection that is a bit unsettling. I never tire of walking into the studio, squeezing out some paints and beginning a new adventure. I am a very intuitive painter and for me, that means usually start without a plan, drawing, set palette, or even much of an idea of what I am about to create. I usually begin with only a few dominant colors and build from that as the painting begins to speak to me. When things are clicking I almost have a dialogue with the painting as I get flooded with ideas to do this or try that. At first I feel a bit in a hurry to get the canvas covered with paint. At that point I don't worry about much more than the interaction and harmony of color. Then the fun part begins. I love to step 10-12 feet back and begin analyzing what works, what doesn't, what to add, scrape away, etc. I paint fairly quickly and sometimes it seems there is an inverse relationship between the time spent and my satisfaction with the finished piece. But, not always! For me, painting is always full of surprises and I get excited to see how it turns out.
